“Investigating the current status of swiftlet farming in George Town ”

An informal discussion was held about the current status of swiftlet farming in George Town. Creighton Connolly, a current intern with the PHT since February 2014 (working closely with former council member Rebecca Duckett-Wilkinson) on the swiftlet farming issue in George Town, discussed his findings regarding the present status of the industry. In 2010, the State government implemented a three year grace period on swiftlet farming, which called for a firm deadline of December 31, 2013 for all swiftlet houses within the world heritage area to be shut down. However, at present, it is estimated that there are at least 37 active swiftlet houses remaining in the core and buffer zones of the WHS – an area of roughly one square mile. The speaker provided a synopsis of the challenges in regulating the industry, and possible steps forward to arrive at a more socially and ecologically just urban future for the people and swiftlets of George Town.
