PHT Site Visit 2018: Cherok To’ Kun and Beyond – Gems of Bukit Mertajam from Ancient to Colonial Times

PHT Site Visit returns with a visit to Bukit Mertajam, the major town on mainland Penang. The visit will include sites such as the 130 years old St Anne’s Church, the Batu Bersurat, the old Cherok To’ Kun Dam and the Church of Sacred Heart in Pagar Teras. Himanshu Bhatt, our PHT Council Member and tour coordinator, will be on site to share interesting nuggets of history and heritage of these sites, and their significance in this present day. International Monuments and Sites Day 2018: Heritage for Generations

International Monuments and Sites Day 2018 is the 36th year that this day is celebrated globally. The theme for this year’s celebration is Heritage for Generations. Over the years, Penang Heritage Trust had joined in to observe this significant date, and this year, PHT would like to observe it by sharing its latest agenda for heritage and cultural conservation and preservation, extracted from the recently launch Penang Forum Agenda 2018.

Penang Heritage Trust celebrates 2018 by organising its first site visit to the recently restored Church of Assumption and the newly opened Penang Diocesan Museum. The Church’s history dates back to the early days of Captain Francis Light’s landing in Penang, whereas the Museum creates history as the first of its kind in Malaysia to showcase artifacts and collections related to the Roman Catholic faith in Malaysia. PHT Site Visit returns with a special site visit to Fort Cornwallis, happening on the 27th of August from 3pm to 5pm. This site visit will not only showcase the fort as it is, it will also reveal the secrets and stories buried underneath the fort.
Dr Goh Hsiao Mei, lead archaeologist for the Fort Cornwallis excavation, and Marcus Langdon, historian and author, will be joining us for the visit and deliver stories and histories related to the fort.

Prapassorn Posrithong will present an interesting talk on the island of Koh Hmak (the Siamese name for Penang), and how it was documented in the history books of Thailand. Penang became an important port for Siamese royal court in Bangkok after Ayutthaya was destroyed. The trading scene can be observed in historical documents found in Phuket. In letters, books and photographs, we also see how Thai royalties describe Penang during their political asylum during the 1932 coup d’état, their lives in Penang during Japanese Occupation and their relations with friends and places they have visited. Penang Forum, a coalition of Penang NGOs including the Penang Heritage Trust, launched the Better Cheaper Faster Penang Transport Master Plan (BCF Plan) on the morning of 13th July 2016. This transport master plan is an alternative to the proposed RM40billion Penang Transport Master Plan proposed to the Penang State Government by SRS Consortium.

The Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) have generated quite a lot of buzz in the public realm. Traffic and transport woes have left many bitter, and holistic solutions have yet to be found and implemented. Is this the master plan to help solve the traffic issues that plague Penang? Are we ready to put in RM 27 billion to develop the plan, RM 40 billion and more to implement it, and sacrifice our land and sea just to see it through? Penang Heritage Trust’s second site visit for 2016 is to the recently restored and refurbished building of Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce. The Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce was the earliest chamber of commerce to be established in George Town, and had serve the Chinese merchants, traders and association members up until today.

This site visit will be conducted by PHT’s president, Ms Lim Gaik Siang.
