Penang Heritage Trust is organising Penang Story Lecture: Townhouse, Shophouse Melaka-Penang World Heritage Site on 2nd August 2015, Sunday. This is the second event of GTF organised by PHT, part of a two-day architecture series.

Abstract

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Melaka and George Town “reflect a mixture of influences which have created a unique architecture, culture and townscape without parallel anywhere in East and South Asia. In particular, they demonstrate an exceptional range of shophouses and townhouses”. Mr Tan Yeow Wooi will talk about the construction and conservation of a broad range of Penang shophouses, including their cultural and stylistic influences. Ms Tan Siok Choo will speak in depth about the uniquely historic 18th century three-courtyard townhouse in Melaka belonging to the family of Tun Tan Cheng Lock and his son Tun Tan Siew Sin, as well as the spiritual significance of this peranakan ancestral home.

​The Speakers

Ms Tan Siok Choo is a lawyer by training, a columnist by inclination and currently chairperson of United Malacca Berhad. After being called to the Malaysian Bar, she worked for 10 years as a business and economic journalist. Thereafter, she spent another 10 years in the financial sector. In 1998, she joined a Malaysian think tank as a Visiting Fellow. She is currently a columnist with The Sun.

Mr Tan Yeow Wooi is a Penang-based architect specializing in heritage conservation. Trained in Taiwan, he has undertaken extensive research on Chinese culture and architecture throughout Southeast Asia. He is the author ofLeong San Tong Khoo Kongsi: The History and Architecture (2003), Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee’s Shen Zhi Jia Shu and Hai Ji Zhan (Majestic Hall, Prestigious Mansion) / 甲必丹郑景贵的慎之家塾与海记栈 (2013) and Penang Shophouses: A Handbook of Features and Materials (2015).
